Title: Hibike! Euphonium
Year: 2015
Creators: Kyoto Animation, Lantis, Pony CanyonL, Rakuonsha, Ponycan USA
Genre: Slice of Life, Drama, Music.
for a long time i thought that i wanted to watch only very masculine and tough anime series. You know, explosions and guns and heavy chase sequences peppered with perhaps a very intriquate and deep storyline. I never paid any mind to Slice-of-life or shoujos because i always had the preconceived notion of thinking it was lame and not for dudes and i'm a big asshole and blah blah blah... But i was wrong. Recently i have started to embrace my inner weeb a whole lot more. I am starting to get used to watching animes of all varieties. Considering also my tumblr dashboard is stuffed to the brim with K-On! (a show that i still have to, and honestly want to watch) and love-live. I have decided to take a stab at some more light-hearted stuff. But that doesn't mean to say i want to devalue the feelings that the show brings.
Hibike! Euphonium is a slice-of-life music based anime created by KyoAni. It follows the story of kumiko oumae. A young girl who has just started her first year in highschool and joins the school's concert band. There she makes 2 new friends. Sapphire and Hazuki. And together they go on a music filled trip of emotions, Love and overall hard work and preserverence. When Kumiko notices a girl she went to Junior with, called Reina, and with the band deciding to head for nationals, she decides to give it her all in this slice-of-life anime
Does that sound like a shit description? well yeah fuck you. I was never really the best at explaining these kinds of things since i really don't want to spoil it.up to now It's a well executed show in pacing, art direction, sound production and characters. Sure, there might be some points where the typical anime slice of life tropes can kind of ruin the immersion. You still have the typical anime/slice of life stereotypes, in this one with maybe a bit more of a "yuri" undertone. But from a general perspective it's a nice watch. very gorgeous artwork. A colorful cast of characters and the music will keep you watching. i almost started comparing the show to having a bit of a "whiplash" vibe. With a great, soft spoken yet very critical band teacher who will take nothing short of great. which asserts more pressure on the characters not only towards one another but towards themselves. But it's not as hardcore as Fletcher chucking chairs at dudes or driving them so mad they want to commit suicide. It's a tough love approach. but it was a fun observation to make.
Still, it's a nice watch. i would say if you still want something somewhat emotionally engaging that isn't too gnarly, give it a shot. Up to now there are only 8 episodes. And the show is still running.
