Artist: John Galm
Album: Sky of No stars.
Year: 2014
Genre: Sadcore, Folk, Singer-songwriter.
John Galm is a pretty active guy within the Philadelphia Punk/emo scene. He played in snowing, an amazing emo group, he played in street smart cyclist, and has been closely associated with the philly punk scene for the last decade or so.
With this album, Sky Of No Stars, he leaves behind the blaring guitars and blistering drums for a more soft, folk approach. Focusing on the theme of death. mostly suicide, murder, and any other way people die. In a certain way it's almost in the same vein as Sun Kil Moon's Direct approach they had on the Album Benji. But while that album somehow felt less melancholic. This one just oozes it. The sparse use of guitars and John's voice seem to resonate this very bleak and harrowing atmosphere. It's not as intimate as Sun Kil Moon, but it's still pretty relatable. Albeit being a lot more blunt about it.
Great Grand is about becoming old and dying. Death #1 Follows how death kills people and how death is just "a part of life, and that is fine". Accident is pretty obvious, it's about a car accident, no surprise there. The River is about a gruesome murder. Seeing ghosts is about a man being haunted by ghosts. Another thing you'll notice is that he'll talk alot about ghosts. But it doesn't take away from how good this album is. Yeah, it's a lot more blunt and melancholic than Benji. and maybe does not share the same merits as Mark Kozelek's music. But i feel i'm doing both albums wrong by comparing them with one another. John Galm just puts death in it's most sincere essence. Yet trying to give it a poetic spin that he doesn't quite pull off. But the lyrics are easy to understand. So the message won't be complex to understand. It's a lot more open in interpretation and not as personal as Benji was. But it doesn't mean this album is any less sad and depressing.
If you are into a more open interpretation about death in music that is not hard to understand, brought to you in a very sparse and haunting matter, i think you'll like this. If you are into Emo music you'll appreciate this for what it is. You can get the album on Bandcamp at a "pay what you want" rate.
If you like this you might also like: Sun Kil Moon, Elliot Smith, Snowing, Teen Suicide, Giles Corey, The world is a beautiful place and i am no longer afraid to die.
